New Texas Heavy-Haul Regulations Call for Side and Rear Blind Spot Detection
New highway regulations in Texas have fleet managers looking for ways to equip specific heavy haul trucks with roll-stability systems and blind spot protection. The new regulations, as laid out in Texas Senate Bill 1524, address heavier oversize and overweight intermodal vehicles that carry oceangoing or international trade containers within 30 miles of a port of entry or international bridge. SB 1524 mandates that roll-stability systems and blind spot protection be installed on these vehicles as a precondition of receiving an operating permit from the Texas Department of Transportation.
Germany Call for New EU-Wide Blind Spot Regulations
Germany’s Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer is calling for all EU trucks to be fitted with compulsory blind spot safety systems to prevent pedestrians and cyclists from becoming injured or even killed because the truck driver was unaware of their presence on the side of the vehicle. As the EU plans new vehicle safety requirements, European truck manufacturers are addressing the blind spot problem in a number of ways.
Case Study: Global Mining Company Cuts Costly Vehicle Collisions in Half in Two Years
Large haul trucks in tight spaces increases the chance of property damage events. Haul trucks can hit things and not even know it. They’re big, they’re rigid, and they’re usually carrying so much weight that the operators can’t always tell if they’ve struck another vehicle, an out-building, or another piece of mining equipment.
The financial loss continues well after the actual crash - the cost of a collision is not just the damage to the equipment. “We have an accident investigation to complete and then a post-accident drug test. The time to perform a drug test can cost in excess of $1,000.00 due to transport of the individual to the off-site facility.”
