Picture this: You’re flying 36,000 feet in the air, on your way to a family getaway, and suddenly the plane experiences a critical system failure. Thanks to the multiple duplicate components and systems on the plane, a new system seamlessly takes over operation of the aircraft, and you and your family safely reach your destination, none the wiser.
The duplication of systems in this scenario is called redundancy, and it’s one of the most common fail-safe methods around. Fail-safe methods are incorporated into many technologies to ensure the reliability and safety of a product. Failure is not an option for modern-day aircraft. Redundancy is essential in keeping systems fail-safe, and protecting people’s lives.
On the ground, the heavy-duty industry relies on safety systems that help operators mitigate potential collision hazards. Effective safety systems actively detect and then warn operators when danger is near. But these systems are not inherently fail-safe unless measures are taken to make them so.
Redundancy is not an option in heavy-duty equipment due to the expense involved to duplicate critical systems. Instead, the cost-effective fail-safe measure is to warn the operator if the equipment’s safety system is compromised or becomes inoperable.

PRECO’s PreView® Radar Object Detection Systems are continuously performing what is called a Built-In Self-Test to make sure a system’s sensors are performing to specification. If an issue is detected, a message is sent to the in-cab display unit notifying the operator of an issue.
Even when environmental factors like a heavy build-up of debris blocks the face of a sensor, PRECO’s object detection systems notify the operator so the sensor can be cleared.
